if i remember correctly... in the "bible stories" book they have an image of jesus nailed to a stake with two nails through his crossed hands. but i'm not sure. you can make just about anything of the bible anyway.

I need a simplified explanation...
by XOCO intoday i had a sister do a bible study with me and i asked her if jesus really died on a torture stake instead of a cross and i showed her john 20:25 emphasizing hands with an s and nails with an s. what the sister had told me was "yes one nail though his hands and one nail though his feet" ok so now back to the emphasis of the s if that were the case why make hand and nail plural be written in the bible then?

Did you have any "well kept secrets" that the congregation never knew of?
by JH inwhen you gather with the same people for decades, they get to know you inside out.
they know where you work, have a good idea how much money you earn, know if you have sex or not, know your personal tastes, know where you go on vacations and so on..... were there things you were able to keep them from knowing?.

Are there a minimum set of core beliefs that all Christians accept?
by nicolaou infor example, a christian could not simply believe that jesus was a compassionate man could he?
christ must be accepted as being divine either as part of a trinity or at least as the son of god.. must a christian believe that the miracles of jesus as recorded in the bible are actual events or can they be accepted as allegory?must a christian believe that "all scripture is inspired of god"?jesus is said to separate the sheep from the goats - can you be a christian without accepting that jesus will kill all the goats?there seems to be so much about christ that many christians are simply too uncomfortable to discuss.
why?

i've been talking to some kind of atheist christians already, so no... there's no smallest denominator.

Self Deceit and Faith.
by hillary_step inthis thread is inspired by a comment made on another thread, but i thought it would make an interesting discussion.. self deceit is described as a "misconception that is favorable to the person who holds it".
my premise is that faith is a form of self-deceit - lying to oneself.. so, i would ask of the "faithful" the following questions and would request that they be read carefully to ensure no that there is no misunderstanding of purpose.. 1) in what way is faith not self-deception?.
2) is a person who has faith in a god that you do not believe in, say for example siva, practicing a form of self-deception?.

> i would be pretty stupid to deny its existence just because it didn't give me 'hope' since i use it continually.
exactly. but even if you wouldn't believe in electricity, you could still use it. it still would be there. and if you don't believe in gravity, you'd still not be able to fly without technical aid. and if you don't believe in evolution, life still changes.
> i also hope the sparrows in my attic don't change into eagles cos that's gonna be a problem.
i guess you know that that's got nothing to do with evolution... -

from a first look i can tell it's not pro... if there are any active JWs on there, they are highly critical.

> it gives me no basis for hope whatsoever.
why believers believe: that pretty much sums it up.
a theory is not a fact that can't be proved, a theory describes something observable, falsifiable, testable. scientific method. you may just chose to not believe in electricity. it does not give us any hope either.
evolution is a law of nature (natural selection + mutation). evolution theory describes how it works. -

The Steps Between JWism and Atheism
by compound complex ingreetings, friends:.
i recently put up a thread entitled "when can i comment?
" new to the thought process of critical thinking, i have felt overwhelmed by the wealth of information now available to a mind opened up to society-banned material.

> How to become an atheist in 8 easy steps or your money back!
love that! :)
i have to add, that during all my steps i had the urge to discuss. i soon found out, that the JWs were not a good place for discussions or even questions. i also found out, that my family was no good place for discussion. i don't know what would have happened if it wasn't for the internet...

The Positive Thread
by Superfine Apostate inpost something positive.. .
i'll make the start: after years of fading, my believing wife stopped attending the meetings also and i no longer have to be careful about what i'm talking about when hanging around with the rest of my jw friends.
for me this is quite an achievement and i'm happy with it.. .
